Antique Bathtubs

Bathtubs have long been existed for century.  The earliest count was that found in Knossos, an ancient Minoan City. Archeologist found the remains of a 5 foot long, tapered bathtub in the site of King Minos’ palace. This bathtub is believed to be that of the Queen’s. It was painted terra cotta and covered in a bas relief of watery motif of reeds. The tub had no outlet so it is evidently filled and drained by hands.

Even during the ancient times, bathtub is the almost common thing in the bathroom of wealthy ancient Greece. The bathtubs dated around 500 BC have been found in various websites. The appearance of these antique bathtubs resembles the bathtubs of the modern generation. These bathtubs are self draining and are typically smaller. It is believed that Ancient Greeks sat during their baths.

This is an antique Roman bath. It is made of bronze and measures 6'4" long x 2' deep. This was buried when Versuvius erupted in 79 A.D.

The closest resemblance of the antique baths is the bathtub called the pedestal bathtub. The pedestal bathtub sits on a matching base instead of clawfeet, inspired by the Art Deco period from which they originated.

Here are samples of the modern pedestal bathtubs:
